In the Academic Jungle: A Single Mother’s Advantures
UPCOMING NOVEL
‘Ruby Strong’ is the main character of this book. Ruby returns to higher education as a shy, timid, soft-spoken single-mother who often feels out of place amongst her much younger peers. Gradually, Ruby re-learns to be a student, and becomes an enthusiastic and dedicated graduate student, despite much hardship she endures. Part of Ruby’s hardships stem from her single-parent status in the early 1970s era, where there were few available support systems for mothers.
However, part of her hardships stem from being a women in an academic world which was (and to some extent, still is) based on white/male hierarchies. In a way, Ruby’s story takes us back to an era where there was not only a glass ceiling, but also a thick layer of (white) men aspiring women academics had to pierce through in order to realize their own potential.
Due to totally unforeseen circumstances and intolerable delays, the widely advertised launch of “In the Academic Jungle” book will not take place on Jan. 24, 2014. I thank everyone who enthusiastically sent me their good wishes, and extend my specific thanks to those who promised to come to the launch in person or in pairs. Please accept my deepest appreciation for all your support and friendship.
