In the Academic Jungle: A Single Mother’s Advantures

UPCOMING NOVEL

‘Ruby Strong’ is the main character of this book. Ruby returns to higher education as a shy, timid, soft-spoken single-mother who often feels out of place amongst her much younger peers. Gradually, Ruby re-learns to be a student, and becomes an enthusiastic and dedicated graduate student, despite much hardship she endures. Part of Ruby’s hardships stem from her single-parent status in the early 1970s era, where there were few available support systems for mothers.
However, part of her hardships stem from being a women in an academic world which was (and to some extent, still is) based on white/male hierarchies. In a way, Ruby’s story takes us back to an era where there was not only a glass ceiling, but also a thick layer of (white) men aspiring women academics had to pierce through in order to realize their own potential.

Due to totally unforeseen circumstances and intolerable delays, the widely advertised launch of “In the Academic Jungle” book will not take place on Jan. 24, 2014. I thank everyone who enthusiastically sent me their good wishes, and extend my specific thanks to those who promised to come to the launch in person or in pairs. Please accept my deepest appreciation for all your support and friendship.

Sara-web-3

“Sara is a Universalist, to be sure, but aspects of her Turkish cultural orientation are also visible –often to good advantage.
Her art is poetic; each painting is composed as a courageous poem. Sensuously she shapes her enchanting panoramas and her dramatic personae in vivid lines and effusive colors.
Caglar’s art exudes beauty. There are times when it provides glimpses of an imagined paradise.
Her work has also joy and melismatic sadness. Her birds, trees, mosques, vessels, shadow theatre characters, dancers, and flowers celebrate nature and life with an exuberance one rarely finds elsewhere in contemporary art.
Ultimately her work is unique, it captivates with visual strategies and psychological thrusts bearing her imprint.”

Poems from the concert:

Sen ve Ben (You and I)
Eng:
I am not in I, nor you are in you or me.
I am both mine and yours and you are mine.
What a peculiar state I find myself in today,
I don’t know if I am you or you are me.

Yedi Öğüt – Seven Lessons
(Turkish)
Cömertlikde, yardım etmede, Akar su gibi ol
Şefkât ve merhametde, Güneş gibi ol
Başkalarının kusurunu örtmede, Gece gibi ol
Hiddet ve asabiyetde, Ölü gibi ol
Tevazuda ve alçak gönüllülükde, Toprak gibi ol
Herşeyi hoş görmede, Deniz gibi ol
Ya olduğun gibi görün
Ya göründüğün gibi ol
Eng:
With generosity and helpfulness, Be like the flowing water
With compassion and forgiveness, Be like the shining sun
When seeing faults in others, Be like the hidden night
When angered and irritated, Be like a corpse
In humility and modesty, Be like the mother earth
In tolerance and patience, Be like the eternal ocean
Either appear as you are
Or be as you appear
